The silent struggle of perinatal mental ill-health is impacting 100,000 Australian parents every year.
Courtney Stubbs is a name that should be familiar to many households in Australia. Her appearance on the reality TV show Love Island propelled her to fame. With her fun and bubbly personality, Courtney quickly gained a huge following, and when she and fellow reality TV star Jack welcomed their baby, their journey captured the hearts of thousands on social media.
Yet, behind the glamorised pregnancy stories and social media portrayals was Courtney’s silent struggle with mental health. The constant nausea, heartburn, and emotional turmoil left her feeling like she was losing herself. “I began to feel like I was a ‘vessel’ for this baby and nothing more”, said Courtney. “I didn’t have any will to do ANYTHING that once brought me joy.”
The turning point came when the couple sought help from her midwife, marking the beginning of a healing process. Despite the discomfort and difficulty, Courtney credits the support she received with helping her realise that she “wasn’t alone” and that her feelings were normal.
Now, Courtney wants to share this heartfelt advice with other expectant and new parents:
“Through pregnancy, motherhood, and parenting, it’s crucial to surround yourself with your village... someone to hold your hand and guide you along the way.”
That’s why Gidget Foundation Australia started: to be another branch of that village and help guide expectant and new parents during one of their most precious and life-changing transitions.
Will you be there with us for parents like Courtney?
