Meet Liz: Graduate of the Workforce Development Program

Liz is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, with over 20 years of experience in non-government mental health organisations. She is committed to supporting families during their transition to parenthood in a kind, compassionate, and encouraging way.

Since completing the Workforce Development (WFD) Program, Liz has joined Gidget Foundation Australia and now works at Gidget House, Greenslopes Private Hospital in Queensland.

The WFD program has equipped Liz with a deep understanding of the depth of mental health challenges that parents and caregivers may face during pregnancy and early parenthood.

Reflecting on her training, Liz shares:

Learning from experienced specialists in the field, sharing insights with peers, and reflecting on our own practice created an opportunity for growth. The program has helped me show up for families in a way that’s both evidence-informed and deeply empathetic.”

Today, Liz approaches each family she supports with one core focus in mind: safety. Her training, combined with years of experience working alongside multicultural families who’ve experienced trauma, has shown her just how vital it is to create a space where each parent feels safe, respected, and never alone.

“Parents often arrive feeling overwhelmed,” she shares. “But once that overwhelm is spoken aloud in a safe, supportive space, things begin to shift. Life starts to feel a little more manageable again. Their strengths resurface, and they acquire new skills to cope.”

She recalls one powerful moment that has stayed with her.

A mother, burdened by anxiety and depression after the birth of her first child, slowly began to find her footing.

“One day in our session, she laughed, really laughed, at something small that happened in her day. After so much worry and sadness, that laughter was a turning point. Joy was coming back.”

Liz is aware that the path to healing from perinatal anxiety and depression isn’t always fast or linear—but it is possible, especially when families have access to compassionate, professional care early.

And the impact of her care? It goes far beyond today.

“Supporting a parent’s mental health doesn't just help in the moment—it lays the foundation for the whole family, for the future. That’s what donors are making possible.”

Double your impact on Gidget Giving Day – Thursday 26 June

Clinical Psychologists like Kylie understand how essential perinatal mental health care is to the wellbeing of new parents and their families. On Gidget Giving Day, Thursday 26 June, every donation will be DOUBLED, helping give twice the care and twice the hope for struggling new parents.
