Why I’m running 100k

Hi everyone-

On Friday 28 November I’ll be running* the Ultra Trail Kosci 100km trail race- going over Australia’s highest peak and slogging it out overnight. When I first signed up it seemed like a good challenge to get me running again after pregnancy. But as I have tried to juggle training with a newborn and now near-toddler, I realised just how absurdly challenging this is.

In fact, in my case it’s objectively not that sensible to be trying to complete the race only 11 months postpartum after a C-Section. And I would probably have backed out by now but for the fact that I’ve had this dream of raising money for Gidget by seeing it through.

Perinatal mental health for both parents is such a huge issue- you won’t go to a new parents’ group without meeting at least one person with a story to tell. And Gidget does great work- supporting parents across Australia through counselling, support groups and information. 

Being a parent is amazing but it’s hard. And it’s especially hard for those struggling with mental health. 

So even though it is objectively a very silly thing to be doing, I can’t think of a better reason to drag myself over 100 alpine kilometres.
